The best age for a cake smash photoshoot is usually around your baby’s first birthday. Most sessions take place when babies are 10 to 12 months old, slightly before or around their birthday, depending on what you’d like to use the photos for.
Why 10–12 Months Works Best
At this age, most babies are:
- Sitting confidently
- Curious and expressive
- Able to interact with the cake
- Full of personality
They’re still very much “baby”, but with enough awareness to explore, react, and engage with the experience.
Before or After the First Birthday?
This depends on how you want to use your photos.
Before the birthday (10–11 months):
- Perfect if you want images ready for birthday invitations or displays
- Baby is often more settled and less mobile
Around or just after the birthday (12 months):
- A lovely way to mark the milestone itself
- Baby may be more active and expressive
Both options work beautifully.
What If My Baby Is Younger?
Cake smash sessions aren’t usually suitable for very young babies. Babies under around 8–9 months may:
- Not sit confidently yet
- Be less interested in the cake
- Tire more quickly
For younger babies, simple milestone or sitter sessions are often a better fit.
What If My Baby Is Older?
Older babies and early toddlers can still enjoy a cake smash, but sessions can feel a little different. They may:
- Be more mobile
- Move quickly out of the setup
- Be less interested in staying seated
That said, it can still be fun, just with a slightly more energetic feel.
