The first birthday session is one of my favourites to plan, because there’s so much more flexibility than people often realise. It’s not just cake smash or nothing. There are a lot of ways to build a session, and the best ones tend to reflect something about the child and the family rather than following a template.
What makes a first birthday session creative?
Mostly it comes down to the choices you make before you arrive. Backdrop, props, colour scheme, outfit, whether you want a cake smash, a tub splash, or both. The studio is set up based on what you’ve told me in advance, so when you walk in everything is ready and we can just focus on your baby.

Ideas for personalising your session
A name banner or a custom number one prop can add something personal without being overdone. Favourite toys are always worth bringing. If your baby has a thing for a particular character or animal, we can usually work with that. Seasonal touches work well too, florals for spring birthdays, warmer tones for autumn, that sort of thing.
Outfits are worth thinking about in advance. Something a little special that you’ve chosen for the occasion tends to give the images a different feel to everyday clothing, though it doesn’t need to be elaborate.
What to expect on the day
The session is relaxed and entirely led by your baby. We work with their mood, their energy, and what they’re interested in on the day rather than following a rigid plan. I’ll capture a mix of set-up shots and more natural moments as we go.
