When parents start planning first birthday photos, one of the most common questions I hear is: “Do we need to do a cake smash?”
The short answer is no. A cake smash is just one way to celebrate turning one, not the only way.

First birthday sessions are really about capturing baby at a really lovely stage of development. Around this age, little ones are full of personality. They smile easily, react to familiar faces, and often show their emerging character in the most natural ways.
Some families love the fun and mess of a cake smash, and that can be a great experience. But many parents prefer something simpler. A clean, calm portrait session keeps the focus on expressions, connection, and personality rather than props or mess.
There are also practical reasons families choose not to include cake. Some babies are unsure of new textures, others have dietary considerations, and sometimes parents simply want portraits that feel classic rather than tied to a particular trend.
A first birthday session can be just as meaningful with simple portraits, favourite outfits, milestone props like a number one, and plenty of natural smiles and interaction.
The most important thing is choosing a session that feels right for your family. Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t cake. It’s remembering who baby was at one year old.
