If you scroll through my cake smash and tub splash gallery, you’ll spot two tubs cropping up regularly: the rustic tin tub and the miniature roll top. But there’s a third option that doesn’t get quite as much airtime, and that’s the milk bath.
For a milk bath, we use my clear tub and add a small amount of milk to the water to give it that soft, creamy colour. You can bring whatever milk you prefer. Quite a few parents bring breast milk, especially if they’re coming up to the end of a breastfeeding year and want to mark that in some way. It’s a lovely touch if it feels right for you.
Milk baths tend to be a bit quieter and more serene than the classic tub splash, which is probably why they’re not everyone’s first instinct. But having shot this recent session, I was reminded of just how pretty they are. We used florals here, but fruit is another popular option. The colours of oranges and strawberries really pop against the milky water, and as an added bonus, they make a perfectly acceptable in-bath snack.
You can also add a milk bath into your 8-month Baby Photography Club session if you’d like to. The one requirement is that your baby can sit steadily and unsupported.
