One of the most common questions before a maternity session is what to wear. Here’s what actually works, and what’s worth avoiding.
Fitted dresses
If you want to show off your shape, a stretch-fitted dress is one of the most straightforward choices. It keeps the bump as the focus without requiring you to show any skin. Solid colours photograph better than busy prints or heavy ruching, which can hide your shape rather than show it. Soft neutrals, pastels, and earthy tones tend to age well. Avoid large logos, bold graphics, or anything with a strong pattern, as these draw the eye away from the bump and can date the images more quickly.
Flowing gowns
Sheer or open-front gowns work well for a softer, more dramatic look, particularly if you want movement in the images. If you go for something sheer, wearing a fitted slip or bodysuit underneath means you can control how much is on show while still getting that floaty, layered effect.
Casual looks
Not a dress person? That’s fine. Your favourite jeans with a simple fitted top, an oversized white shirt worn open over the bump, or soft knitwear all work well. Keep the colours neutral and the styling simple and it photographs just as well as anything more elaborate.
Colours
Soft whites, creams, beiges, and gentle greys are always a safe choice. Dusty pinks, muted blues, and warm earthy tones also photograph well. Very bright colours can create unwanted colour casts against skin, and deep jewel tones work for more dramatic, studio-style shots. If you’re unsure, bring a couple of options and we can look at them together on the day.
Underwear and lingerie
If you’d like to include something more intimate, plain well-fitted lingerie in black, white, or neutral tones tends to photograph best. Strapless bras are worth considering as they won’t leave marks on your shoulders before other outfits. Bodysuits and simple swimwear are also good options if you want a fitted silhouette with a bit more coverage.
Makeup and jewellery
A polished, natural look photographs well. Fresh skin tends to work better than heavy or ultra-matte foundation under studio lighting, and defined lashes help without overpowering. For jewellery, less is usually more. Delicate pieces or one meaningful item works well. Large statement pieces tend to pull attention away from the bump.
