A lot of people feel a bit self-conscious during pregnancy, especially in front of a camera. That’s completely understandable, and it’s something I think about a lot when I’m working with maternity clients.
Stepping in front of the camera when you’re not feeling your most comfortable self takes courage. I know that. So a big part of my job is making sure you feel relaxed and looked after from the moment you arrive, not just pointing a camera at you and hoping for the best.
You don’t need to know anything about posing. I’ll guide you through everything, and I’ll never put you in something that feels awkward or unnatural. The aim is always to find what works for your body, your bump, and how you want to feel in the photos.
How posing works in a maternity session
I’ll guide you into positions that work well for your body and your bump, adjusting things as we go depending on what’s looking good through the lens. We’ll work in a mix of standing, sitting, and reclining poses, and I’ll bring in some gentle movement where it feels right, things like flowing fabric or soft hand placements, which tend to add a lot to the final images.
If your partner or children are joining you, I’ll direct everyone so nobody’s left standing there not knowing what to do with their hands.
Some of the things we’ll explore during the session: cradling your bump, side-on silhouette shots to show the curve of your bump, seated and reclined poses for a softer feel, and partner poses if someone’s joining you. If you want to include something meaningful like a scan photo or a pair of baby shoes, just bring them along.
Do I need to have done this before?
Not at all. Most people arrive feeling a bit unsure and leave with images they genuinely love. I’ve never met a client who couldn’t be photographed beautifully. I just needed to find the right angles, and that’s my job, not yours.
