Caring for a baby often comes with a constant question running through your mind: “Is this normal?”
The truth is that many behaviours that feel confusing, exhausting, or even alarming are actually part of healthy development. Here are some of the most common ones.

Frequent Night Waking
Babies are not biologically wired to sleep long stretches in the early months. Their sleep cycles are short, their stomachs are small, and they wake easily for feeding and reassurance.
Night waking is especially common during growth spurts and developmental leaps.
Wanting to Be Held All the Time
Newborns do not yet understand that they are separate from their caregivers. Being held helps regulate their body systems and provides essential emotional security.
You cannot spoil a baby by responding to their need for closeness.

Putting Everything in Their Mouth
Mouthing objects is a key way babies explore texture, shape, and taste. It also provides comfort during teething.
This behaviour peaks during the first year and is an important part of sensory development.
Sudden Fussiness or Crying
Babies often become unsettled due to tiredness, overstimulation, hunger, or developmental changes. Crying is their primary form of communication. Most unsettled periods pass with comfort, feeding, rest, or simply time.
Trust Your Instincts
While these behaviours are normal, you know your baby best. If something feels unusual or concerning, seeking professional advice is always appropriate. Reassurance and support are just as important as information.
