When you’re packing up for your newborn photography session, it’s easy to second-guess what to bring—and what not to. Should you bring a dummy? What if they need a bottle? What if you forget something completely?
Let me stop you right there and say this: you don’t need to stress.
Here’s a simple list of what can be helpful—and a little reassurance that my studio is a no-judgement space where you and your baby can just be yourselves.
you’re using a dummy—bring it!
Some parents feel shy about offering a dummy during a session, especially with newborns. There’s advice out there about waiting a few weeks, and that’s totally valid—but if your baby uses one and it helps them settle, I’m all for it. Sometimes a quick suckle is all they need to drift off peacefully between photos, and if it works for your baby, it works for me.
Bring milk, bottles or anything they feed with
Whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or a combination of both, bring whatever they need to be fed and content. I always work around your baby’s rhythm, and you’ll have time and space for feeding breaks as needed.
Muslins, always a good idea
I always keep a supply of muslins at the studio, but if you have a favourite one, you’re welcome to bring it along. They’re perfect for wiping, wrapping, or tucking under tiny heads when needed. They’re also a great way of providing a home scented comfort to your baby while I’m settling them.
Nappies and wipes
While I don’t keep nappies here (everyone has different sizes, fits and brands they prefer), just bring what you’d normally pack in your changing bag. I do have a nappy bin and everything set up for easy changes, so you’ll have what you need. I’ll be changing nappies during the session anyway (whatever is in them) as it’s just easier for me to do it on my lap and they won’t care about leaving me as much as they’ll care about leaving you!
Snacks and a drink for you
Here’s something people don’t always think about—you’ll have some quiet time while I’m working with your baby. It’s the perfect moment to enjoy a hot drink or snack, scroll your phone, or just exhale for a minute. So pop something in your bag that feels like a treat—you deserve it.
Bottom line? Just bring what helps.
If you’re not sure what you’ll need, don’t worry—I’ll always adapt to whatever works best for your baby. You don’t have to be perfectly packed or perfectly prepared. You just have to show up, and I’ll take care of the rest.
