Newborn photography is all about capturing those tiny, delicate details and peaceful, curled-up poses. But babies don’t stay in that sleepy, flexible stage for long! That’s why timing your session right is essential.

When Is the Best Time for a Newborn Photo Shoot?

The ideal window for newborn photography is between 5 and 14 days old. During this time, babies are naturally very sleepy, flexible, and easy to pose in those sweet, womb-like positions.

Why This Timeframe Matters

Newborns change incredibly fast in their first few weeks of life. Here’s why the 5-14 day window is the sweet spot:

  • Deep Sleep – Newborns spend most of their time in a deep sleep, making them easier to pose without disturbance.
  • Flexibility – Babies are still naturally curled up from being in the womb, allowing for those adorable, snug poses.
  • Minimal Skin Issues – Many newborns develop baby acne, peeling skin, or other temporary skin changes after the first two weeks.
  • Less Sensitivity to Touch & Movement – After two weeks, babies become more aware of their surroundings and can be harder to settle into posed positions.

What If You Miss the 5-14 Day Window?

Life happens, and sometimes parents can’t schedule a session within the first two weeks. The good news is you can still have a beautiful newborn session after this period—it just looks a little different.

  • 2-6 Weeks Old – Babies are more awake and less curled up, but we can still capture beautiful moments with more relaxed, natural posing.
  • Older Than 6 Weeks – If your baby is past the newborn stage, don’t worry! A baby photo shoot is still a wonderful way to capture their growing personality. We can focus on connection, expressions, and interaction.

When Should You Book?

To make sure you get a spot in the ideal timeframe, I strongly recommend booking while you’re still pregnant. Since we don’t know exactly when your baby will arrive, I schedule your newborn session for your due date plus seven days, and then we adjust it as needed once your baby is here.

If you’ve already welcomed your little one and haven’t booked a session yet—don’t panic! Get in touch as soon as possible, and I’ll do my best to fit you in.
