a black and white image of a newborn in a classic newborn tummy tuck pose

If you look up newborn photography, the most common pose you’ll probably see is the Tummy Tuck position.

Actually, when I started to write this article, I wondered if I had just been calling it that in my own head (that happens a lot) and it turns out that the common name for it is Bum Up but if you ask me, that’s a stupid name and so I’m going to stick with the Tummy Tuck for the purposes of this.

Anyway, the tummy tuck is one of the most classic newborn poses for a reason.  I mean, look at it.  It’s adorable.  It’s also a pose that is well tolerated by a good proportion of newborns, not all because they can be capricious but I’d say 80% of newborns will settle into it with a bit of experience.  However, there’s a cautionary note here in that when newborns get out of the traditional window, they will start to unfurl naturally as they work out that there is a lot more space for them to stretch into than they are used to and this position gets harder to achieve.

It works beautifully with your newborn either naked, dressed or just with something covering their nappy (I have lots and lots of choice in this regard) and that makes it very flexible in terms of styling.  It is also a great pose both on the giant beanbag or on a good amount of props.

Like I say, it’s a classic newborn shot and one that I’ll always try to work into a session in some capacity to give you a really full and varied image gallery.
