This client had done her research before arriving. She’d already ordered three dresses of her own alongside the studio options, which made for a good variety across the session.

A pregnant woman poses in a flowing red dress

I fell for this red one in particular. Photographed with the light from the front it looks striking, but backlit it does something different entirely. The red colour is still there but the light comes through the fabric and highlights the silhouette of the bump in a way that front lighting doesn’t. It’s one of those happy discoveries you make in the session rather than in the planning stages.

I’ve since added a red chiffon gown to the studio collection as a result. Inspiration has to come from somewhere.

In terms of timing, the sweet spot for a maternity session is usually somewhere between 28 and 36 weeks. The bump is well established and rounded, but most people are still comfortable enough to move around and try different poses without it being too much. If you’re unsure when to book, just get in touch and we can work it out based on your due date.
