Babies change so quickly. The stage your little one is in right now won’t last long, which is exactly why it’s worth capturing. Here’s everything you need to know to make the session as smooth and relaxed as possible.
Timing your session
The best age for a baby session depends less on an exact number and more on where your baby is developmentally. As a rough guide:
4 to 6 months is great for tummy time, those first proper smiles, and all the lovely chubby cheek action.
8 to 10 months tends to work well for sitting confidently and more interactive shots.
12 months and beyond brings standing, early walking, and first birthday portraits.
Top tip: mid-morning tends to work best. Babies are generally happiest then, and it’s well clear of the late afternoon witching hour.
What to bring
You’ll already have a bag packed with everything your baby needs. For the session, it’s worth adding:
A few outfit options. Up to three works well. Soft, simple, and comfortable wins every time.
A favourite toy. Something familiar helps with smiles, and it makes a lovely addition to the photos as a record of what your baby loved at this age.
Snacks and drinks. A well-fed baby is a much happier baby.
A dummy if you use one. Great for settling between setups.
Top tip: don’t be embarrassed to pull out every silly noise, face, or dance move you’ve got. I have absolutely no shame when it comes to getting a good expression, and I’ll join in with whatever works.
Choosing outfits
Simple and comfortable is always the right call. A few things to bear in mind:
Soft, neutral colours keep the focus on your baby’s face and expressions. Busy patterns and large logos pull attention away from the things that actually matter in the photo.
Knits, soft cotton, and delicate textures all photograph well and add a bit of depth to the image.
Avoid dungarees if your baby is still quite small. They’re lovely but when a baby is still building strength in their neck and upper body, they can sink into the top section and it doesn’t photograph as well.
Peter Pan collars are also worth avoiding. They have a habit of sticking up and blocking the face, even when they look fine at home.
If you want outfit inspiration, I have studio options available, and I’m happy to chat through ideas before the session.
Getting your baby ready on the day
Keep their routine as normal as possible. Stick to usual nap and feed times, and try not to put any lotion or baby oil on their skin just before the session. Natural baby skin photographs really well.
Your baby doesn’t need to perform for the camera. Some of the nicest images come from serious little expressions and quiet moments, not just the big grins.
If your baby is teething, bring whatever you use to help — teething powder, a chilled teething ring, anything that gives them some comfort between shots. And if they’ve got rosy teething cheeks, I can smooth that out in editing.
Wriggles, wobbles, and movement
Some babies love to sit still. Most don’t. Both are absolutely fine.
If your baby isn’t sitting independently yet, I have props, cushions, and supports to keep them safe and comfortable, and I’ll always have a parent close by when we’re working at height. If they’re on the move and not keen on sitting, we work with that rather than against it.
What if your baby is having an off day?
It happens. Babies have off days, and that’s completely normal. I always build plenty of time into the session so there’s no rush, and breaks for feeds, cuddles, and a bit of a reset are always part of the plan.
If your baby is seriously unsettled and the session just isn’t working, we can always rearrange. Your session should be something you enjoy, not something you push through.
Get in the photos yourself
Baby sessions aren’t just for babies. Parents, siblings, and grandparents are all welcome to join in for a few shots. Some of the most-loved images from a session end up being the ones with the whole family in them.
One last thing
Your baby picks up on your mood. If you’re relaxed, they’re more likely to be relaxed too. I’ve been doing this for a long time and I’ll guide you through the whole session, so you don’t need to worry about knowing what to do. Just turn up, enjoy it, and let me handle the rest.
