Teething is one of those baby milestones that can arrive quietly or turn daily life upside down. Symptoms often appear long before you can see or feel a tooth, which makes it hard to know what is really going on.

While every baby experiences teething differently, there are several common signs that often appear during this stage.

Increased Drooling

Many babies suddenly produce far more saliva when teething begins. You may notice damp clothing, frequent bib changes, or even mild skin irritation around the mouth and chin.

Chewing on Everything

Pressure in the gums makes babies want to bite down constantly. Toys, fingers, clothing, and anything within reach may end up in their mouth as they try to relieve discomfort.

Flushed or Red Cheeks

Teething can cause cheeks to appear warm, pink, or slightly blotchy. Some babies develop redness on the side where a tooth is pushing through.

Fussiness and Irritability

Sore gums can make babies more sensitive and difficult to soothe. You might notice more crying, clinginess, or frustration than usual.

Changes in Sleep

Discomfort often becomes more noticeable at night when there are fewer distractions. Babies who previously slept well may begin waking more frequently or struggling to settle.

When Symptoms Start Before Teeth Appear

Teething signs can begin weeks before the first tooth breaks through the gum. This long lead-in is why many parents feel confused or unsure.  It is also common for symptoms to come and go as teeth move within the gums before emerging.

Remember: Every Baby Is Different

Some babies breeze through teething with very little disruption, while others find it much more uncomfortable. Both experiences are completely normal.  If your baby seems unsettled and you are unsure of the cause, trust your instincts. Offering extra comfort, cuddles, and soothing options can make a big difference.
