Pregnancy can feel mysterious. Your baby is growing, moving, and changing every day, but most of it happens out of sight. Modern research and ultrasound technology have revealed that life in the womb is far more active than many people realise.
Here are five remarkable things your baby may already be doing before they’re born.
Babies Can Cry Before They’re Born
By around 28 weeks, babies begin practising the movements they’ll use to cry after birth. Ultrasound scans have shown silent sobbing motions, including changes in breathing patterns, facial expressions, and mouth movements.
There’s no sound, of course, but the physical rehearsal is there. It’s part of how babies prepare for communicating their needs in the outside world.
Babies Might Be Dreaming
During the third trimester, babies experience REM sleep, the stage associated with dreaming in adults. Brain activity patterns during this time suggest that babies are processing information and possibly even forming early sensory experiences.
No one knows exactly what they might be dreaming about, but it’s a sign of a developing brain that’s already hard at work.
for communicating their needs in the outside world.
Babies Practise Facial Expressions
Ultrasound images often capture babies frowning, smiling, squinting, or grimacing. These movements help strengthen facial muscles and coordinate the complex actions needed for feeding and expression after birth.
It’s essentially a rehearsal for life outside the womb, where facial communication becomes incredibly important.
Your Baby Tastes What You Eat
Flavours from your meals pass into the amniotic fluid, giving your baby an early introduction to different tastes. Research suggests that babies exposed to certain flavours during pregnancy may show a preference for them after birth.
This early sensory experience is one reason why diet during pregnancy can influence later food acceptance.
Babies Can Recognise Music
By the third trimester, your baby can hear sounds from outside the womb. Familiar voices, rhythms, and especially repeated music may become recognisable.
Many babies respond to songs or sounds they heard regularly during pregnancy, which is why some parents find that familiar music can be soothing after birth.
A Busy World Before Birth
Even though you can’t see most of it, your baby’s world inside the womb is active, responsive, and full of preparation. From practising movements to developing senses, these early experiences help lay the groundwork for life outside.
Pregnancy isn’t just a time of growth. It’s a time of learning, adapting, and getting ready to meet you.
