a newborn in a nest surrounded by peach peonies

You know you’ve been in the game for a while when you get your first third generation client in the studio!

Whilst I didn’t photograph this beautiful little girl’s mum when she was a newborn, she was pretty young when she started visiting the studio with her parents.   It made me feel old for sure, but also very lucky to have such a great bunch of long standing clients as I do.  One of my greatest pleasures with my work is watching families grow both in age and number over their studio visits and this was certainly no exception.

I’ve never used my vintage peach peonies inside my nest prop before but I set it up this way as the little girl in question was a bit restless and it was taking sometime to settle her into a new environment.  I had planned to create a close up shot so you just saw her and the peonies which is the image that I usually make with them on their beanbag.  However, to save time I set it up in the nest and, although I did make the close up shot as well, I loved the result of the flower filled nest.  Definitely one that will be going on the agenda for future shoots.

One of the first things you have to learn as a newborn photographer is to be adaptable to the baby that you’re working with.  Despite being so young, they already have their own preferences in terms of how they like be moved and posed so not all babies will be happy to do everything you might have on your mental agenda for the shoot.  Having a plan is great and I always do but as the saying goes, man makes plans and newborns laugh (pretty sure that’s the saying), and so I simply modify my approach and ideas according to how your baby is feeling on the day to make sure we get the maximum amount of images in your finished gallery.
