Newborns may be small, but they’re already pretty incredible. Even in those early days, their bodies and brains are working in surprising ways.
I’ve put together five fun facts about newborns that I think are both fascinating and heartwarming—perfect for anyone who’s expecting, has a new baby at home, or just loves a bit of baby trivia.
1. The heaviest baby ever born weighed 10.2kg (22 lb 8 oz)
Born in Italy in 1955, this newborn weighed more than a bowling ball! Thankfully, both mum and baby reportedly did well. Just one of the more jaw-dropping baby records out there.
2. Babies have more taste buds than adults—including on their tonsils!
Their mouths are full of extra taste receptors in those early weeks, which might explain some of their very strong opinions on flavour. Flavours from mum’s diet can even influence their preferences.
3. Newborns can recognise your voice—and your accent
In the final trimester, babies begin to distinguish speech patterns and rhythms. That means they’re getting to know your voice (and your accent!) before they’ve even been born.
4. Newborns see in black and white—then red
Babies don’t see in full colour straight away. High-contrast colours are easiest for them to focus on at first, with red often being the first colour that really registers.
5. The only fears we’re born with are falling and loud noises
Everything else—spiders, clowns, public speaking—comes from experience. Those two primal fears helped keep tiny humans safe back in the day.
