Parents often say it: they knew what their baby was like from the very first days. Not because they imagined it, but because temperament shows up early and shows up clearly. The way your baby responds to the world around them, to noise and new faces and being put down, tells you a great deal about who they are.
Here is what to look out for, and what it might mean.
Settled or Sensitive to Stimulation
Some babies are calm in busy environments from the very start. They sleep through noise, feed without fuss and seem unbothered by a room full of people. Others find stimulation harder to manage, becoming unsettled when there is too much going on around them.
Neither response is a problem. It is simply one of the earliest signs of your baby’s individual temperament coming through.
How Quickly Your Baby Calms Down
All babies cry, but how long it takes your baby to settle afterwards varies enormously. Some babies calm quickly once a need is met, while others take much longer to come back to an easy state even after feeding or being held.
This ability to self-regulate is one of the clearest early indicators of temperament, and it tends to stay fairly consistent as your baby grows.
Reaction to New People and Faces
Some babies are content to be held by anyone from the early weeks, smiling and engaging freely with new faces. Others show a clear preference for familiar people and become unsettled when passed to someone they do not know well.
Both responses are completely normal. Your baby is not being difficult — they are simply showing you how they are wired.
Sleep and Feeding Patterns
Babies who fall naturally into a routine tend to have an easy-going, adaptable temperament. Those who resist routine, feed unpredictably or take longer to settle are not doing anything wrong – their nervous system simply works differently.
Understanding this early can help take some of the pressure off, and make it easier to work with your baby rather than against them.
How Active and Alert Your Baby Is
Some babies are still and observant, happy to lie and watch what is going on around them. Others are wriggly, alert and restless from the earliest days, seemingly always ready for the next thing.
Activity level is one of the most visible early temperament traits, and it gives you a real window into the kind of person your baby is becoming.
