The first year of a baby’s life is full of quiet but constant change. What feels familiar one week can look completely different just a few weeks later.

For parents, this year often passes in a blur of new experiences. Photographs become a way of holding on to the moments that would otherwise disappear almost as quickly as they arrive.

While there is no single “perfect” time for baby photos, there are a few stages during the first year that naturally capture different aspects of your baby’s development and personality.

a guide explaining the best time photograph babies during their first year

Why babies change so quickly

Babies grow and develop more rapidly in their first year than at any other time in life. Physical changes happen alongside emotional and social development, which means each stage has its own distinctive feel.  In just twelve months, babies move from tiny curled newborns to curious, expressive little people who can sit, laugh and explore the world around them.  Photographing a few key stages during this time helps preserve the story of that first year.

The newborn photography stage

Newborn portraits are usually taken during the first couple of weeks after birth, when babies are still naturally sleepy and tend to curl into the familiar positions they had before they were born.  This stage captures:

• the tiny size of a newborn
• delicate features and soft expressions
• curled poses and peaceful sleep

Newborn photographs often focus on calm, gentle images that highlight just how small your baby was in those earliest days.

The first year passes quickly, but photographs taken at a few key moments help preserve the story of how your baby grew and changed during those early months.

The first smiles stage

Around two to four months, babies begin to show more awareness of the people around them. This is often when the first social smiles appear.  At this stage babies are starting to:

• recognise familiar faces
• respond with smiles and expressions
• make eye contact
• show early personality

Photographs taken during this time feel very different from newborn portraits because babies are more alert and engaged with the camera.

The sitting milestone stage

One of the most popular times for baby photography is when babies can sit confidently without support, usually around six to eight months.  This stage is ideal for portraits because babies are:

• stable and balanced while sitting
• expressive and curious
• able to interact with toys or their surroundings

It is also a wonderful age for capturing personality, as babies often laugh, reach and react to the people around them.

First birthday portraits

By the time a baby reaches their first birthday, they are usually full of movement and character.  First birthday portraits often celebrate how far your baby has come in a single year. At this stage babies may be:

• crawling or starting to stand
• laughing and interacting easily
• exploring their environment with confidence

Some families choose simple portraits, while others include a small celebration such as a cake or splash session.

Why Photographs Matter More Than You Think

The photos you take during the early years aren’t just nice to have. They become the visual memory of a childhood, the details that would otherwise fade, and the story your child will return to again and again as they grow.
