One of the biggest worries parents have before booking a newborn session is simple and very understandable:

What if my baby cries the whole time?

Newborns cry. They’re adjusting to a brand new world, and some days are louder than others. The reassuring news is that newborn sessions are designed with this in mind. A crying baby is not a disaster. It’s part of normal newborn behaviour, and experienced photographers expect it.

Sessions Move at Your Baby’s Pace

There is no pressure to “get through” a newborn session quickly. Plenty of time is built in for feeding, changing, settling, and cuddling.  If your baby needs a break, we pause. If they need to be held, we hold them. The session adapts to your baby, not the other way around.  Often, the simple act of being warm, fed, and gently handled in a calm environment helps babies settle naturally.

Feeding Breaks Are Completely Normal

Many newborn sessions include multiple feeds. Whether you breastfeed, bottle feed, or combination feed, there is always time and privacy.  A full baby is usually a much happier baby, and feeding often leads to the deep sleep that makes those peaceful portraits possible.

Comfort Comes First

Studios are kept warm and quiet specifically for newborns. Gentle handling, slow movements, and soothing techniques are used throughout.  If something doesn’t feel comfortable for your baby, it simply isn’t done. Safety and wellbeing always come before any particular pose or image.

Crying Doesn’t Mean Failure

Parents sometimes worry that a crying baby means the session isn’t “working.” In reality, it’s just part of caring for a newborn.  Some of the most meaningful images come from cuddles, feeding moments, or being held close while your baby settles.  There is no expectation for perfection.

Experienced Photographers Know How to Settle Babies

Years of working with newborns teaches gentle techniques that help babies relax, such as careful positioning, rhythmic movement, and reading subtle cues.  Even babies who arrive wide awake or unsettled often drift into sleep once they feel safe and warm.

You Won’t Be Judged

Many parents worry that a crying baby reflects badly on them. It doesn’t. Everyone in the room understands that newborn life is unpredictable.  Your job is simply to care for your baby. Everything else is handled for you.

If You’re Feeling Nervous, You’re Not Alone

Concerns about crying, feeding, sleep, and how the session will go are incredibly common. If you’re feeling anxious about booking at all, it may help to read about the worries many parents quietly carry before their session and how they’re handled.
