Newborn portraits don’t have to look like everyone else’s. The basics – a sleeping baby, soft wraps, good light – are always there, but there’s a lot of room within that to make the session feel personal to your family.

Why personal props matter

Some of the most meaningful sessions I do are the ones where families bring something from home. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. A blanket knitted by a grandparent, a toy that’s been waiting in the nursery for months, a piece of jewellery that’s been in the family for years. These things add a layer of meaning to the photos that no studio prop can replicate.

A few things families often bring along:

Blankets and wraps. Something gifted at a baby shower or made by a family member works really well. Soft textures photograph beautifully, and it’s something your baby will always be connected to in the images.

Toys and keepsakes. A favourite teddy or a small memento can make a real difference to how personal the photos feel.

Hobby or interest items. A tiny football shirt, a book that means something, a scarf from a team you love. It sounds small but it tells a lot about your family.

Family heirlooms. A christening gown, a piece of jewellery, something passed down. The image at the top of this post is a good example – that family brought a bed mat they’d bought on the holiday where they found out they were expecting. It was perfect.

What’s available in the studio

If you don’t have anything specific in mind, don’t worry. I have a good selection of props at the studio in Crawley Down and I’m adding to them regularly.

Wraps and textures. A large range of soft wraps in pastel, neutral, and bolder tones. I have a bit of a prop-shopping habit so the collection keeps growing.

Baskets, crates, and bowls. Safe, cosy containers that work well for curled-up poses.

Floral and seasonal elements. Whether you want something soft and springlike or a bit more wintry, I have floral arrangements and themed props that can set the mood.

Hats, headbands, and accessories. My collection now features super soft, tiny headbands, tiaras, and turbans. Newborn accessories have come a long way from the oversized floral headbands that used to be everywhere – these are gentle additions that complement rather than compete.

Thinking about colour

If you’re planning to print and display your photos at home, it’s worth thinking about what colours work in your space. Neutral and pastel tones are a safe choice and tend to age well. If you have a colour scheme in mind for the nursery or a room where you’d like to hang the images, mention it when we chat and we can factor that in.

Keeping it simple

Props are optional. Plenty of families prefer a clean, simple session with minimal extras, and that works just as well. Whatever you choose, your baby is always the focus – props are there to add to the image, not take over it. A few well-chosen things will always work better than trying to include too much.

Newborn photo shoots are best when your baby is between 5 and 10 days old. This is when they’re at their sleepiest and curliest, perfect for capturing those beautifully calm and natural images. I recommend booking while you’re still pregnant so we can set a provisional date and adjust once your baby arrives.

Your session takes place in my warm, cosy studio in Crawley Down, designed with your baby’s comfort in mind. Sessions are relaxed and unrushed, and include three digital images of your choice for £95.
