Digital backdrops are one of my favourite things to offer clients, because they open up a range of images that simply wouldn’t be possible any other way. This post explains what they are, how I use them, and how to choose one for your session.
What are digital backdrops?
A digital backdrop is a pre-designed, high-resolution image that I composite your baby into during editing. Rather than a physical backdrop that’s present in the studio during your session, it’s added in post-production, with your baby photographed on a safe, comfortable surface and then blended seamlessly into the chosen design.
Some of my backdrops are realistic, the kind of scene that could exist in real life: floral settings, woodland arrangements, rustic props. Others are more fantastical, starry night skies, hot air balloons, moonlit clouds. The range is deliberately varied because different families want very different things.
Why I use them
The main benefit is safety and creative flexibility working together rather than against each other. For certain images, trying to create the effect in-studio would mean putting your baby in a position that isn’t safe. Digital compositing means I can photograph your baby on a soft, secure surface and create the same result in editing.
It also means I can keep your baby settled during the session. Changing physical props and backgrounds repeatedly is disruptive. If one of your chosen images uses a digital backdrop, I can shoot for it without waking your baby up or moving them more than necessary.
And honestly, it just adds variety to your gallery. A mix of traditional studio images and a digital backdrop or two tends to give you a really interesting range of finished portraits.
How the process works
When you get your options form the day before your session, you’ll see the digital backdrop range and can choose whether you’d like to include one. If you do, I need to know in advance so I can plan the base image specifically for that backdrop during your session. The lighting, angles, and pose all need to match the chosen design for the composite to look natural.
The editing work happens back at my desk after the session. The final result looks as though your baby was actually there, though nobody’s convincing anyone we really did put your baby on a hot air balloon in space.

A few questions I get asked regularly about how digital backdrops work. If yours isn’t here, just get in touch.

After your session, I carefully edit the images and add the chosen digital backdrops, making sure everything meets my usual high standards.
This process typically takes around two weeks. Once complete, you’ll receive a link to your private online gallery where you can view and choose your favourite images.

Yes. I take great care when blending each digital backdrop with the original photograph to create a seamless, polished result.
While no one is meant to believe your baby was actually floating in a hot air balloon, the lighting, tones, and details are carefully matched so the final image feels natural, balanced, and beautifully finished rather than obviously “photoshopped”.

Yes. Your baby’s safety is always my top priority. Using digital backdrops means your newborn is photographed on a soft, safe, and comfortable setup in the studio, without the need for complex or potentially uncomfortable poses. The backdrop is added later during editing.

Digital backdrops are professionally designed images that are added during the editing process. In my studio, your newborn is photographed on a safe, neutral setup. I then carefully integrate the chosen digital backdrop during editing to create a polished, natural-looking image that fits your chosen style.
