When you think of newborn photography, your mind probably goes straight to those sleepy, squishy portraits full of soft blankets and peaceful expressions.

And while those are absolutely a core part of every session, there’s something equally important that I always make sure to include: the tiny details.  Especially hands and feet.

Why These Tiny Details Matter

Newborns grow at lightning speed. One day they fit in the crook of your arm, and the next, you’re chasing a toddler across the garden. The hands that once curled tightly around your finger, the toes that barely poked out of a sleepsuit—they change so fast.

That’s why I always make time during every newborn session to capture close-ups of hands and feet. Because while a portrait shows who they are, these little details show just how small they were.

It’s All About Connection

Tiny fingers wrapped around yours. A hand resting gently on a parent’s chest. Baby toes peeking from a wrap. These moments speak of connection, scale, and love—and they’re often the ones parents come back to time and again.

I also love to photograph hands side by side—baby with parent or sibling—to show just how fleeting this stage is. Those visual comparisons only become more powerful as the years pass.

A Quiet Kind of Magic

Some of my favourite images are the quietest ones. A hand resting softly under a cheek. A foot stretching lazily mid-yawn. These moments aren’t posed—they just happen when babies are relaxed and content, and I’m always watching for them.

Because in the end, those little hands and feet are part of what makes your baby your baby. And when the whirlwind of those early months passes, you’ll be glad you captured them.

It’s often the tiniest details that take your breath away.
Those perfect little fingers curled around yours. Tiny toes that fit in the palm of your hand. In newborn photography, capturing hands and feet isn’t just about completing the picture—it’s about preserving the precious details that change so quickly. These gentle close-ups add so much heart to your gallery, and they often become the images families treasure most.
