Baby Cass came to the studio at just a few days old for his newborn session. He took a little time to settle, but we got some really peaceful shots of him.
My long-tailed elf hats are some of the most popular props in my newborn collection, and it’s easy to see why. They’re a great way to add something to a shot without disturbing your baby at all — which is a real bonus if your baby is a bit unsettled during part of the session. Which, if I’m being honest, most of them are. They look peaceful in the photos, but it’s not always that way in real life.
When newborns cry or won’t settle easily, I can see parents start to panic that we won’t get any photos. I think it’s because when you see published newborn images, babies are almost always asleep – which gives the impression that they arrive that way and stay that way. I wish they did. That would make my job considerably easier. But in reality, nearly every baby will be wakeful, hungry or cross at some point during their session, and sometimes all three at once. We just deal with whatever they need and wait for them to settle before we move on. It doesn’t phase me in the slightest, so there’s never any need to worry. We always get there in the end.
