Every prop in my studio has a story, and this one very nearly didn’t survive being made without at least one taste test joke from everyone who walked past.

The popcorn boxes dotted around CarnEvil started life as the cheapest plastic popcorn tubs I could find. From there it’s mostly crazy foam, torn and dabbed into rough little clusters, then hand painted with layer after layer of acrylic paint until it looked properly golden and buttery. A final pour of resin over the top gave it that glossy, fresh out the machine shine.

Two of the tubs are straightforward popcorn, if a little too convincing for comfort. The third has a topping of tiny Halloween baby heads, because apparently if you’re building a dark carnival, somebody has to ask would you like baby heads with that.

It’s a fiddly, messy process (there is foam absolutely everywhere in my workshop right now), but the CarnEvil set really is built one strange little prop at a time.

Halloween & Pumpkin Patch

This Halloween, a dark, twisted carnival called CarnEvil has taken over the studio, complete with Rotton Candy, the Kissing Booth and Grinning Jim popping out of his box. Fancy something a little calmer? The Pumpkin Arch is running alongside it, with warm autumn colours and dried florals.

Sessions run 23rd to 25th October, with booking opening 27th September.
