The first few weeks with a new baby are full-on. Feeding, sleeping, adjusting, surviving. Booking a photo session can easily slip down the list, and before you know it your baby is six weeks old and you’re worried you’ve left it too late.

You haven’t.

Beautiful photos don’t have an expiry date

The classic newborn window – those first two weeks when babies curl up and sleep through almost anything – is a lovely time to photograph, but it’s not the only time. Babies between three and eight weeks old can still have a really good session. It just looks a little different, and that’s not a bad thing.

What’s different at this stage

Once your baby is past those first couple of weeks, they’re more awake, more aware, and a bit more opinionated about the whole thing. In practice that often means:

They’re more likely to stay awake during the session. They may prefer to be loosely swaddled rather than wrapped tightly. Their movements are stronger and their startle reflex is more active. They might have a bit of flakiness, milk spots, or colic going on.

All of this is completely normal, and all of it is photographable.

What we focus on instead

The deeply curled, fast-asleep poses are less likely at this stage, but there’s plenty of other things worth capturing. Wide, wondering eyes. Tiny hands wrapping around yours. The little facial expressions and stretches that come and go in seconds. Close-ups of eyelashes, hair whorls, and newborn toes. And already, at just a few weeks old, a personality starting to show.

These sessions have a different feel to them. More alert, more curious, more real in some ways.

How the session works

Everything is kept gentle and simple. Soft wraps, blankets, and neutral textures that suit your baby’s age and stage. We go at your baby’s pace, with plenty of time built in for feeds, cuddles, and settling.

If your baby sleeps, great. If they don’t, we work with the wide eyes and focus on connection and detail instead. You don’t need to prepare anything differently, and siblings or parents are always welcome to join in for some shots too.

There’s no such thing as too late

Whether your baby arrived early, you’ve had a tough start, or time just got away from you — there is always something worth photographing. Every age brings its own things, and a few weeks old is still very, very new.

You didn’t miss the moment. You’re still in it.
