The Role of Props in Newborn Photography

While not everyone is a fan of having props in a newborn session and they certainly aren’t obligatory, they can play an important role in enhancing the look and feel of your newborn photos. They can add warmth, personalise your session, and help tell your family’s story in a unique way. From simple wraps to meaningful keepsakes, the right props can bring an extra layer of charm to your baby’s portraits.

Studio Props vs. Personal Items: What’s Best?

At my studio, I have a wide selection of carefully chosen props that are designed to complement newborn photography beautifully. These include:

✅ Soft, textured blankets and wraps in neutral and pastel tones
✅ Wooden bowls, baskets, and beds to create cosy setups
✅ Delicate floral elements and lace for a timeless, classic feel
✅ Hats, bonnets, and headbands to add a subtle finishing touch

You’ll be able to browse and choose from my prop collection when you receive your options form the day before your session.  That way, you have time to consider what you’d like, and I’ll have everything set up and ready for you when you arrive at the studio so we don’t waste a moment.

However, adding personal items to your session can make your photos even more meaningful. If you’d like to bring something from home, consider:

🧸 A favourite soft toy – A beloved teddy or comforter can be included in a few images, making them even more special as your baby grows.

🧶 Handmade or heirloom items – Knitted blankets, handmade clothing, or gifts from grandparents can add a sentimental touch.

🏆 Family or hobby-related props – Some parents bring small items related to their interests, such as musical instruments, sports team memorabilia, or even a tiny book to reflect a love of reading.

If you’re not sure if something will work, then I’d always say to bring it along and we’ll work it out on the day.  Better to have it there then regret not bring it along – I can usually work out a way to include things.  The only thing I’ve really failed on was a giant rubber duck that a client brought along once but that’s a whole other story!

Keeping Props Simple & Safe

While props can be a wonderful addition to newborn sessions, they should never overpower your baby in the images. I always prioritise simplicity, safety, and comfort. Newborns are delicate, so all the items in my prop collection are carefully curated for safety in terms of strength, stability and smoothness and then I double check everything again when I’m setting up ahead of your session.  Any hard props are always well padded out with blankets and beanbags before I place your baby into or onto them and when something (like my miniature white bed for example) involves your baby being off ground level, there will be a parent on hand just out of shot to make sure everything stays super safe.

If you’re bringing your own items, it’s best to keep them small, soft, and lightweight. Large, heavy, or hard props can be difficult to incorporate safely and naturally.

How Props Can Enhance Your Session Theme

Props are also a great way to reflect a theme for your newborn session. Whether you love a natural, organic look or prefer something a little more whimsical and playful, we can style your shoot to match your preferences.

Some popular themed props include:
🌿 Rustic & natural: Wooden elements, soft greens, and earthy tones
🎀 Soft & feminine: Lace wraps, tiaras, delicate pinks and creams
🌟 Minimal & modern: Neutral tones, simple swaddles, and classic black & white setups

If you have a particular vision for your shoot, let me know before your session so we can plan the perfect setup together!

The best newborn photos focus on your baby first, with props simply adding a gentle touch of personality. Whether you use studio props, bring sentimental items, or opt for a completely minimalist approach, I’ll work with you to create a session that reflects your family’s story.
