The newborn window is usually described as the first two to three weeks. That’s when most babies will sleep through a session, curl into poses, and stay more or less where you put them. By five weeks, things are starting to shift – more alert, more opinions, less predictable.

This little one was five weeks old when she came in, and her mum wanted the session to have a newborn feel to it. Totally doable, just requires a slightly different approach. The mini white bed is ideal for this – it’s an easy prop to work with, gives good support, and keeps things calm without needing the baby to be deeply asleep throughout. As you can see, she was very much awake and taking it all in.

Sessions with very young babies move quickly, and that’s by design rather than rushing. Small babies get overwhelmed fast – new place, new smells, lights. So everything is set up and ready before you arrive. The moment you walk in, we can get straight to it and make the most of the time before she decides she’s had enough.

Five weeks is still very much worth photographing. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
