Many parents are surprised by how determined babies can be to chew, lick or mouth anything they can reach. From toys to clothing to their own hands, it can sometimes feel as though everything goes straight to the mouth.
In reality, this behaviour is not only normal but an important part of development during the first year.

Sensory Exploration
Babies learn about the world primarily through their senses. While adults rely heavily on vision and touch, babies use their mouths as a powerful sensory tool. The mouth contains many sensitive nerve endings, allowing babies to gather information about texture, temperature and shape.
Learning About Objects
By mouthing objects, babies begin to understand how things differ from one another. A soft toy feels very different from a wooden block or a cool teething ring. These experiences help build early knowledge about objects and their properties.
Practising Coordination
Bringing an object from hand to mouth is also a motor skill. Babies are learning to control their movements and coordinate their hands with what they see.
Repeated practice helps strengthen these skills.

A Normal Stage of Development
Mouthing behaviour usually peaks during the first year and gradually decreases as babies become more mobile and explore in new ways. Providing safe, clean objects designed for babies allows them to explore comfortably while reducing worry for parents.
Although it can feel messy or inconvenient, this stage plays an important role in helping babies learn about their bodies and their environment.
