a little boy playing peekaboo at his photo shoot against a blue backdrop

Ever wondered why babies love playing peekaboo? It’s more than just adorable—it’s science in action.

From around 5 to 8 months, babies begin to understand something called object permanence—the idea that things (and people!) still exist even when they can’t see them. Before that, if you cover your face, it’s as though you’ve vanished from their world. But as their brains develop, they start to get the game—and when you pop back into view, it’s the best surprise ever.

It’s why peekaboo is such a hit in my studio. When little ones aren’t sure about sitting for a photo, covering my face with my hands (or a soft toy, or even a muslin cloth) and popping back out with a smile never fails to get a giggle. That moment of recognition—“you’re back!”—is pure gold.

If you’ve got a baby at this age, you’re probably already a peekaboo pro without even realising you’re boosting their brainpower!
