I photographed this family’s wedding ten years ago. Then their first baby arrived, and they came to the studio. Then their second, and they came again. And now here they are, two kids, both full of personality, both holding the same toys that featured in their newborn photos five years apart.
The second image is from their recent portrait update. The first is from the newborn session when their son arrived, big sister in her Big Sistersaurus t-shirt, absolutely delighted with the situation.
Five years is a long time. They’ve gone from a newborn and a toddler to two proper children with opinions and energy and a very clear sense of what they want to do in a studio. The session was good fun. They were great company.
The toys were their idea to bring. A fox and a flamingo, both still going strong. It’s one of those small details that makes an updated portrait session into something more — a little thread between then and now that you might not notice at first glance but that means something when you do.
If you’ve got old session photos and a family that’s grown up since, an updated portrait is worth thinking about. Especially if you can find the toys.
