This is Artie, sleeping peacefully at his newborn session and looking just Peaky Blinders perfect in the little flat cap his mum and dad brought along.
He was a little unsettled at the start, but perseverance is key with newborn photography. We fed and rocked him until he was ready to settle, and in the meantime I have a few strategies for getting as many images as possible out of an unsettled baby. We always start with those when a baby isn’t sure about sleeping, so that if they do wake up and get grumpy you’ve already got pictures in the bag.
Newborn photography is quite a lot like a particularly unpredictable game of Buckaroo. I work with your baby taking the lead, and they can go from zero to sixty at the drop of a hat, or in this case a flat cap, and back again just as quickly. When babies are unsettled at the start of a session I can see parents starting to worry they won’t get any pictures. Rest assured, we always get there in the end.
