This is a little peek at the set up for a simple first Joey Club session that I’m working on in my studio today.

These clients have already been to visit my studio for their newborn photos and so they have automatic free membership of my Baby Photography Club so they’re back in the studio today after about five months – which I’m pretty sure has whizzed by at an unreasonable speed! I usually recommend waiting for your first Club session until your baby is really good on their tummy so you can get some tummy time shots and add a bit more variety to your finished image gallery to make your selections from.  I already know, from their newborn photo shoot, that these guys like to keep things pretty plain and simple and so I wasn’t surprised to see on their photo shoot options form (which you send in the day before your session to let me know what you’d like to do with your photo shoot) that they opted to keep a monochrome colour scheme and have chosen one of my most classic props.

As these sessions take place when your baby is still small, maybe four or five months, we will mostly be working on my giant beanbag which we cover with blankets to add in the backdrop.  Like I said earlier, I recommend waiting until they are good on their tummy before coming to visit but it’s not super likely that they’ll be sitting up by themselves at this point.  This is where my specially designed horseshoe posing cushion comes in as it let’s them sit up whilst still keeping them safe and supported.    These clients requested just black and white for the backdrops but of course I have lots of colours you can choose from.

You won’t have access to my full range of props at your first Baby Club session as most of them work best when your baby can sit up by themselves but there are a few props we can use as long as your baby is a confident tummy timer when they come to visit. This is one of them – my vintage suitcase – and your baby can pose on it on their tummy (or sometimes on their back can look really cute if they’ve found their feet by the time you come to visit).  In the case of this set up, we’ve kept it plain and simple on the carpet against a white backdrop with a fluffy rug added in for texture (and because it’s cosy!) but there are lots of ways that we can style it to reflect your tastes.  It looks great with florals, personalised blankets and also teddies.  All my props are picked to be as versatile as possible!

My camera. Well obviously. But more importantly a squeaker to get your baby looking at the camera. If you’ve been to visit, you might well know this guy as ‘the kissing giraffe’ as he loves to squeak and dive in to give kisses to older kids to make them smile for their pictures!
