I love a cake smash and I’ve been doing them for about 8 years now I think. In that time, cake smash sessions have gone from something I used to have to explain to someone to one of the most popular shoots in the studio.
Over that time, I must have seen hundreds of different cakes in terms of decorations on the outside and colours on the inside. I have to admit to particularly loving a rainbow cake though – maybe I just have a big love for rainbows, that might well be it. When you’ve gone to the effort of making a cake that’s as pretty on the inside as well as the outside, we always make sure that you can see it in the finished photos.
So once your baby has got the idea of what we’re asking them to do and is getting into their session (sometimes that can take a few minutes – it’s a new thing for them so we always give them time to get the hang of it), I’ll get you to cut a chunk of the cake out of the front so we can see the insides. Actually, I only have a little wooden spoon in the studio given that it would be quite a bad idea to have knives kicking about so technically, you’ll be spooning a chunk of cake out but it works fine. The spoon is always a useful addition to the session in terms of letting your little one interact with the cake if they’re a bit shy of getting it on their hands so it’s a multipurpose spoon – got to love that efficiency!
