Preparing for Your Baby’s Photoshoot
Booking a photoshoot for your baby is exciting, but it can also bring a lot of questions. Many parents worry about whether their baby will sleep, what to bring, or how the session will work.
The good news is that baby photography sessions are designed to be calm, flexible and guided entirely by your baby’s needs. You don’t need to arrive with a perfectly behaved baby or a detailed plan.
This guide explains how to prepare, what to expect and how to feel confident going into your session.

Feeding Before the Session
A well fed baby is usually a settled baby, so feeding shortly before the session can help your baby feel relaxed and comfortable.
For newborn sessions in particular, many parents feed their baby just before arriving or immediately after arrival in the studio. This helps encourage sleepiness and contentment.
If your baby becomes hungry during the session, there is always time to pause for feeding. Nothing is rushed, and breaks are a normal part of baby photography.

What Should Baby Wear?
Simple clothing photographs best.
Soft, neutral outfits without large logos or busy patterns help keep the focus on your baby rather than the clothing. For newborn sessions, babies are often photographed wrapped or in minimal outfits to highlight those tiny early features.
If you are unsure what to bring, it is always better to bring a couple of simple options rather than too many complicated outfits.
Comfort is always more important than fashion during a baby session.
What Should Parents Wear?
If parents are included in the photographs, soft neutral colours work beautifully and keep the overall look timeless.
Avoid bold patterns, large text or very bright colours, as these can draw attention away from the connection between parent and baby.
Simple, comfortable clothing that allows you to hold and cuddle your baby easily is ideal.
What If My Baby Cries or Won’t Settle?
Babies cry. It is completely normal and expected.
Sessions are designed with plenty of time to soothe, cuddle and settle your baby. Gentle movement, feeding breaks and a calm environment all help babies relax.
There is no expectation that your baby will behave perfectly. In fact, responding to your baby’s needs is the most important part of the session.
Often the quiet moments after a cuddle become some of the most beautiful photographs.

What If My Baby Won’t Sleep?
Not all babies sleep during their session, and that is perfectly fine.
Awake babies can produce wonderful photographs full of eye contact, expressions and personality. Many parents are surprised by how lovely these images are.
Sessions are flexible enough to work whether your baby sleeps deeply, dozes lightly or stays awake and curious.
What to Bring to Your Baby’s Photoshoot
A small bag with essentials is usually all you need:
• nappies and wipes
• milk or feeding supplies if needed
• a spare outfit for baby
• a dummy if your baby uses one
• comfort items your baby enjoys
Having these items nearby simply helps everyone feel prepared and relaxed.

Allow Time to Arrive Calmly
One of the best things you can do is allow extra travel time so you arrive without stress. Babies are sensitive to their parents’ emotions, and a calm arrival helps set the tone for the entire session. Once you are in the studio, there is time to settle, feed and relax before photography begins.
