Siblings are always welcome to join in the fun at a newborn session and in fact, I had photographed this very proud big sister when she was a newborn herself.
She’s still quite little herself and so generally speaking I would photograph her and the new arrival lying on the floor together so there is no need for her to provide any support and everyone stays perfectly safe. We took this approach to start with and she did so brilliantly that we decided that she might well be able to have a photo whilst holding her baby brother – her parents really wanted to try it and so we decided to give it a go. She was the model big sister and did it perfectly but we had dad just out of shot to provide a helping hand if it was needed.
When youngish siblings are involved in holding a newborn, I usually recommend that we work with them in a wrap. They’re easier to handle like this for the brother or sister and easier to pose for me – when they’re just in normally clothes, they can end up quite crunched up when being held by someone small. In all cases, we never try if there’s any doubt that it can be done safely and there’s always a parent very close by to prevent any slips. Safety first always…
Still, totally worth the set up when you get to capture the earliest days of siblings becoming best friends.
Newborn Photography
A newborn photo shoot is best when your baby is between 5 and 10 days old as this is when they are at their maximum sleepiness and poseability to capture those dreamy shots. For this reason, I definitely recommend that you book when you are pregnant as this is one less thing to worry about scheduling when you’ve just got home from the hospital. We make an appointment for your due date plus 7 days and then adjust it as needed.
My newborn shoots include your three favourite digital images which you select from your online gallery a few weeks after your photo shoot – I don’t make you attend a sales or viewing session. Sessions take place in my warm and cosy studio in Crawley Down and cost £95.
