When you talk about swaddling a baby, it can sound a bit old fashioned but honestly, let me tell you, that a good swaddle is one of my biggest allies in the studio when it comes to newborn photography.

So much so, I’ve actually invested in these super cool base layers that make the whole things so much easier and secure.  This is a surprising fact only if you know that I really don’t like newborn photography gimmicks and gadgets and the market is full of them.  Most of them are expensive and pointless as far as I’m concerned but I was seduced by the advert for these and I have to say that they are a game changer.   They’re basically a neutral and highly effective swaddle that is totally adjustable to fit all sizes of newborn – it holds fast with quiet close velcro and once a baby is settled into it, you don’t need to disturb them to change the outer colours or move them between settings.

Even before I had these lovely little things, I’ve always worked with a lot of swaddles as newborns just love them – they feel safe, cosy and secure and their super easy to customise both in terms of colour and style to match in with the type of images that you’d like to create.

They’re also great when you’re creating family images, a wrapped up baby is a lot easier for a big brother or sister to handle as they don’t need to worry about keeping them supported in a way that doesn’t leave them all crunched up so you can’t see them properly.  Even with parents, they are useful as we can move them around so much more when they’re in burrito form.

Snug as a bug in a rug!
