We did start with a cake. But his mum and dad wanted to try something a bit different as well, and they brought along a watermelon, so we gave it a go.
The watermelon smash is exactly what it sounds like. A whole watermelon, cut into slices, placed in front of a one-year-old and left to their own devices. The results are messier than a cake smash in some ways and considerably juicier in all ways. He thought it was brilliant.
I should mention that I supplied the knife for the cutting, which meant greeting his parents on the drive with a large knife in hand. Not my most conventional welcome. They took it well.
The blue dreamy set, soft blue backdrop, white clouds, lanterns, stars, worked really nicely with the bold red and green of the watermelon. Sometimes the contrast does the styling work for you.
If you fancy a watermelon smash alongside or instead of a cake for a first birthday session, it’s an option. Just don’t be alarmed if I’m holding a knife when you arrive.
