People do sometimes ask me if they can bring their dog along to a family photo shoot and my answer is always along the lines of, hell yeah!

Dogs are more than just pets—they’re beloved members of the family, and their presence in your family photos can make the memories even more special. Whether it’s your energetic puppy or your loyal companion, including your dog in a family photoshoot is a wonderful way to capture the complete essence of your family.

Why Include Your Dog in Your Family Photos?

Our pets are with us through thick and thin, sharing in our family milestones and daily life. From the laughter-filled moments to the quiet times together, they are a constant source of love and joy. Including your dog in your family photos not only honours that bond but also preserves memories that reflect the whole family dynamic. These photos become cherished reminders of the love and companionship you share.

When Should I Include My Dog in the Photoshoot?

Including your dog in a family session is easy as long as you’re comfortable with the group size. For families with children, it’s best to wait until your little one can sit up on their own before including them both in the same shot, as safety and comfort are a priority. However, I’m more than happy to include your dog in photos with adults at any stage—whether it’s a formal family portrait or a relaxed, candid shot.

For newborn sessions, dogs can be included, but I recommend having someone along to help with the pet during the session to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Tips for a Successful Family Photoshoot with Dogs

  • Bring Treats and Toys: We’re not about bribery at my studio and dogs respond well to rewards, so make sure to bring along their favourite treats or toys to keep them engaged and motivated during the shoot. Unlike with kids, bribing a dog with food is a tried-and-true method for getting their attention!
  • Be Patient: While I’ll guide you and your dog through the shoot, dogs can sometimes take a little time to settle into the session. Be patient and let them get comfortable in the studio space—it’s all part of the process to capture the best shot.
  • Comfortable Clothing: Ensure you and your dog are comfortable for the session. For your family, I recommend wearing clothes that fit well and are easy to move in, while your dog should be in their usual comfort zone. If your dog is nervous around certain items like collars or leashes, bring along something that will make them feel at ease.  If you want to bring along outfits for your dog, you won’t find me objecting!
  • Plan Ahead for Post-Session Care: After the session, your dog might need a little rest or a treat to wind down, especially if they’ve been active during the shoot. Having these plans in place makes the experience better for everyone.

Dogs Bring Joy to Every Photo

Incorporating your dog into your family portrait session adds a layer of joy and authenticity that can’t be captured any other way. Whether it’s your dog in the background, playing with the kids, or sitting proudly beside you for a posed shot, these moments truly reflect the love you all share.
