The Evolution of Newborn Photography: How It Shapes My Approach in the Studio

Newborn photography has transformed significantly over the years, with trends coming and going, but one thing remains constant—capturing those first precious days in a way that feels timeless and meaningful. When I started photographing newborns 15 years ago, the industry was very different from what it is today. Over time, my approach has evolved to balance beautiful, artistic posing with a relaxed, baby-led experience, ensuring that every family who steps into my studio in Crawley Down leaves with images they love.

Classic vs. Modern Newborn Photography

In the early days, newborn photography was often very traditional, focusing on simple, blanket-based portraits with the baby carefully positioned in natural poses. These images are still incredibly popular, and I love incorporating these classic, beautifully lit portraits into my sessions.

However, modern newborn photography has embraced a wider variety of styles, including:

  • Highly posed, artistic setups – Think curled-up poses, creative props, and beautifully styled newborn images.
  • Lifestyle-inspired imagery – A more relaxed, natural approach that captures real, authentic connections between parents and their baby.
  • Baby-led posing – Allowing the baby to settle into natural positions that feel comfortable rather than forcing certain poses.

In my studio, I’ve found the perfect balance between elegance and comfort. My sessions offer posed setups for those beautifully styled newborn portraits while still ensuring that baby remains comfortable and relaxed throughout.

How My Newborn Photography Style Has Evolved

While I’ve always been drawn to classic and timeless newborn imagery, I’ve refined my process over the years to ensure that sessions are stress-free for parents while capturing the beautiful details of these early days.

Here’s what has changed in my approach over time:

More personalised styling: I now offer a variety of backdrops, props, and wraps to match your vision, whether you want something neutral and simple or something more stylised.

A focus on baby’s natural comfort: While I love beautifully posed images, I also ensure that my sessions are completely baby-led. If a baby isn’t comfortable in a certain pose, we adapt and create something just as special.

Flexible setups for every family: I love incorporating parents, siblings, and even family pets into newborn sessions! This was less common when I started, but I’ve found that it creates incredibly meaningful images.

Digital enhancements and retouching: Over the years, my editing techniques have refined to provide the most natural-looking retouching, ensuring that babies look beautifully fresh and soft, without over-editing.

Why Your Newborn Session Will Always Be Timeless

While photography trends continue to shift, I always aim to create classic, heartfelt images that you’ll cherish for a lifetime. Whether you prefer simple and organic or stylised and creative, my newborn sessions are designed to capture your baby’s first moments in a way that feels personal to you.

The best part? You don’t have to choose one style. My sessions allow for a variety of setups, giving you a diverse gallery that reflects both elegance and personality.

If you’re thinking about booking a newborn session, I’d love to create something special for your family. Booking while you’re still pregnant ensures we can secure a date within those first 5-10 days, the perfect time for those sleepy, curled-up newborn portraits.
