As with all things, photography fashions evolve over time. When I first started doing cake smashes, most parents opted to just have their little on in a nappy.
Then the market for cake smashes grew and instead of me having to explain to people what they are, they are a pretty standard part of first birthday celebrations. This meant that the range of outfits especially designed for the purpose exploded and lots of people bought them along. Personalisation was definitely new and got popular really fast and it’s easy to see why.
Lately I’ve noticed that folk are starting to go with having their baby smash the cake in a smart outfit or a party dress which in a way is kind of funnier as you would normally be trying to keep their nice stuff clean.
Of course, there’s no rules and you should do whatever you want at your cake smash – nappy, outfit, bow tie, alligator costume (it hasn’t happened yet but hey I’m still hoping). There’s no bad answers there but I always think it is interesting to watch the fashion shift over time.
While they’re shifting, feel free to enjoy this guy in his natty bow tie. Quite the gentleman smasher…
