Every set I design and build starts with lots of small, quiet decisions. Colour, texture, how things feel in little hands – all the details that help a set feel soft rather than shouty.
However, I couldn’t get exactly what I wanted in terms of eggs for the Easter Bunny (and he’ll only accept the best) and because I like my photos to be unique to me, I decided to make some eggs to coordinate with the rest of the set. These eggs were made using polystyrene eggs, tissue paper and diluted PVA glue. It’s a simple process, but one I really enjoy – layering colour slowly, letting things dry naturally, and ending up with eggs that feel gentle and slightly imperfect in the best way.
They’ll be part of this year’s Easter Mini Photo Shoots, styled alongside the Easter Bunny and his friends in a brand new studio set. I love making props this way because it keeps everything tactile and child-friendly, and it means every element on the set has been made with care rather than pulled off a shelf.
You can see these eggs in action during my Easter Mini Sessions in the studio, and I’ve shared a short video showing how I made them for anyone who enjoys a peek behind the scenes or fancies having a go at home.
