Newborn Photography in East Grinstead
Welcoming a new baby into the family is one of the most meaningful moments in life. Those first tiny fingers, sleepy stretches and brand new expressions pass so quickly, which is why many parents choose to capture them with a professional newborn photography session.
I have been photographing newborn babies for more than fifteen years in my West Sussex studio, creating calm, natural portraits that families treasure for years to come. If you are thinking about booking a newborn photoshoot, this guide explains when to book, what age works best, and what you can expect during your session.

When to Book Your Newborn Photography Session
The best time to book newborn photography is during pregnancy. Many parents secure their session during the second or third trimester so that space is reserved in my diary around their due date. Because babies rarely arrive exactly on schedule, newborn sessions are booked with flexibility so the final date can be adjusted once your baby arrives.
Booking ahead ensures there is time set aside for you and your baby during those early weeks.

What Age Is Best for Newborn Photos?
The classic newborn portraits people often picture are usually taken within the first two weeks of life.
During this stage babies are typically very sleepy and naturally curl into those gentle newborn poses. This allows for the soft, cosy portraits many families love.
However, beautiful newborn photos are still possible a little later as well.
I photograph newborns up to around four weeks old, although sessions can feel slightly different as babies become more alert and begin to stretch out of those curled newborn positions.
Every baby is different. I have had wonderfully sleepy sessions with four week olds and very curious, wide awake five day olds.

Can Newborn Photos Be Taken After Two or Three Weeks?
Yes, absolutely.
While the first two weeks are ideal for the classic curled newborn poses, older babies often bring their own charm to a session. They may be more expressive, more alert and already starting to show hints of their personality.
If your baby is closer to three or four weeks old, the session simply adapts to suit them. The focus may shift slightly towards more relaxed posing, natural stretches and beautiful detail photographs.
Premature babies are also often photographed later depending on their adjusted age.

What Happens During a Newborn Photoshoot?
Newborn sessions take place in my studio in Crawley Down near East Grinstead. The studio is designed to be calm, warm and comfortable for both babies and parents.
A typical newborn session lasts around two hours. This allows plenty of time for feeding, settling and cuddles without any sense of rush.
During the session we will photograph a mixture of images, which may include:
• baby portraits on soft blankets and wraps
• close up details such as tiny fingers and toes
• natural family photographs with parents
• gentle posed portraits while baby sleeps
Everything moves at your baby’s pace. If they need feeding, changing or a cuddle, we simply pause and continue once they are settled.

Is Studio Flash Safe for Newborn Photography?
Yes, studio flash photography is completely safe for babies. I have photographed hundreds of newborn sessions using professional studio lighting without any issue. Professional studio lighting is carefully controlled and designed for photography environments. The brief flash of light used during a photograph is similar in brightness to normal daylight and does not harm a baby’s eyes.
Many parents ask this question, so it is always something I am happy to explain before a session. Your baby’s comfort and safety are always the priority throughout the shoot.
What If My Baby Won’t Sleep?
This is one of the most common worries parents have, but there is no need to stress about it.
Some babies sleep beautifully during their session, while others prefer to stay awake and watch the world around them. Both can create lovely photographs.
Because the studio session is booked for two hours, there is time to allow babies to settle naturally. Feeding, cuddling and gentle soothing all help create a calm environment.
And if baby decides to stay awake? Awake newborn portraits can be absolutely beautiful too.
Preparing for Your Newborn Photography Session
Before your session I will send guidance to help you prepare, but in general the most helpful things are:
• feeding baby shortly before the session
• bringing spare nappies and milk if bottle feeding
• choosing simple clothing for parents if family photos are planned
• allowing plenty of time so you arrive relaxed
The goal of the session is always to create a peaceful, comfortable environment where both baby and parents can relax.

Why Families Choose Professional Newborn Photography
The newborn stage passes incredibly quickly. Within a few short weeks babies begin to stretch, grow and change.
Professional newborn photography captures those early days in a way that is difficult to recreate later. Soft lighting, careful posing and a calm studio environment allow families to preserve those tiny early details.
Many parents tell me that these portraits become some of their most treasured photographs as their children grow.
A Calm and Experienced Approach to Newborn Photography
Photographing newborn babies requires patience, experience and a gentle approach. After more than fifteen years specialising in newborn photography, I understand how to work at a baby’s pace and create a calm, comfortable environment for both parents and baby. Sessions are never rushed, and everything is designed to help families relax and enjoy the experience while we capture those fleeting early days. For many parents, these portraits become some of the most treasured photographs they will ever own.
