When I open the Witches’ Cafe for Halloween photo shoots on October 17th, you won’t be the only visitors. I have staff members who shall also be in attendance – including these fancy rats.
Meet the Duke and Duchess of Gnawbridge
Long ago, when candlelight flickered against velvet drapes and banquets stretched on for days, the Duke and Duchess of Gnawbridge dined beneath the grand tables of the palace. Courtiers whispered about their impeccable taste — no mere scraps for these two. They nibbled only the choicest morsels, silvered crumbs, and pastries dusted with sugar meant for royalty.
But palace life was fickle. When whispers of witchcraft swept through the halls, the pair were accused of carrying secrets from the kitchens to the covens. Banished from the court (though never from polite society, in their minds), they found refuge at the Witches’ Café, where their tastes remain as exacting as ever.
The Duke insists on crimson waistcoats, pressed weekly, while the Duchess will not be seen without a proper hat and her handbag clasped firmly at her side. Though their flesh has long gone, they still keep up appearances – a dab of rouge on her cheekbones, a fresh polish on her nails, and lace trim to remind the world that standards must be maintained, even in death.
Now, they preside over the Café’s corner table, judging every new brew and pastry with a skeletal smirk. The witches tolerate them with bemusement — for who else but the Duke and Duchess could turn a platter of “Mystery Meat Pie” into a discussion of etiquette and presentation?
