When you think of newborn photography, your mind probably goes straight to those sleepy, squishy portraits with soft blankets and peaceful expressions.

And while those are absolutely a core part of every session, there’s something equally important that I always make sure to include: the tiny details. Especially hands and feet.

Why These Tiny Details Matter

Newborns grow fast. One day they fit in the crook of your arm, and the next you’re chasing a toddler across the garden. The hands that once curled tightly around your finger, the toes that barely poked out of a sleepsuit – they change quickly and they change a lot.

That’s why I always make time during every session to capture close-ups. While a portrait shows who they are, these details show just how small they were.

Connection and Scale

Tiny fingers wrapped around yours. A hand resting on a parent’s chest. Baby toes peeking from a wrap. These shots show scale in a way a full portrait can’t, and they’re often the ones parents come back to most.

Hands side by side – baby with parent or sibling – are particularly good for this. Those comparisons only become more interesting as the years go on.

The Quiet Moments

Some of my favourite images are the quietest ones. A hand resting under a cheek. A foot stretching mid-yawn. These aren’t posed – they just happen when baby is relaxed, and I’m always watching for them.

It’s often the tiniest details that take your breath away.
Those perfect little fingers curled around yours. Tiny toes that fit in the palm of your hand. In newborn photography, capturing hands and feet isn’t just about completing the picture—it’s about preserving the precious details that change so quickly. These gentle close-ups add so much heart to your gallery, and they often become the images families treasure most.

Newborn Photography in East Grinstead

Newborn photo shoots are best when your baby is between 5 and 10 days old. This is when they’re at their sleepiest and curliest, perfect for capturing those beautifully calm and natural images. I recommend booking while you’re still pregnant so we can set a provisional date and adjust once your baby arrives.

Your session takes place in my warm, cosy studio in Crawley Down, designed with your baby’s comfort in mind. Sessions are relaxed and unrushed, and include three digital images of your choice for £95. There’s no sales session, just a private online gallery where you can view and choose your favourites in your own time.
