Dogs are always welcome at newborn sessions. For a lot of families the dog is very much part of the household, and it makes sense to include them in photos that are marking such a significant moment.

That said, it does take a bit of thought, and not every dog will take to a studio environment in the same way. Here’s what’s worth knowing before you book.

Will my dog be comfortable in the studio?

The studio is a calm, quiet space, which works in your favour. Most dogs settle reasonably well once they’ve had a few minutes to get used to the surroundings. Dogs that are generally relaxed and comfortable around new people and places tend to do best. If your dog is very anxious or excitable, it’s worth having an honest think about whether a studio session is right for them, and it’s always fine to ask me if you’re not sure.

How does it work on the day?

We don’t do the dog section at a set point in the session. I’ll bring your dog in at whatever moment I feel the baby is most deeply settled, which could be early on or later depending on how things are going. It tends to work better that way than trying to stick to a fixed order.

A couple of practical things to sort before you come: give paws a wipe and check noses are clean. It makes a bigger difference than you’d think in photos, and it’s much easier to deal with before the session than in editing afterwards.

Once we’ve got the shots we need, a family member can take the dog home if you prefer so the rest of the session stays calm for your newborn.

What if my dog can’t make it?

If bringing your dog isn’t possible, some families choose to include a favourite toy, collar, or a framed photo of their dog in the session instead. It’s a small touch but it means something.

If you’d like to include your dog, just mention it when you book and we’ll make sure the session is planned around it.

Newborn Photography in East Grinstead

Newborn photo shoots are best when your baby is between 5 and 10 days old. This is when they’re at their sleepiest and curliest, perfect for capturing those beautifully calm and natural images. I recommend booking while you’re still pregnant so we can set a provisional date and adjust once your baby arrives.

Your session takes place in my warm, cosy studio in Crawley Down, designed with your baby’s comfort in mind. Sessions are relaxed and unrushed, and include three digital images of your choice for £95. There’s no sales session, just a private online gallery where you can view and choose your favourites in your own time.
