Silhouette images are something I make time for at every maternity session. They work really well on their own or with a partner, and they’re consistently some of the most liked images in any maternity gallery.
There are two approaches. A full silhouette uses dramatic lighting against a dark backdrop so the image is entirely about shape. A demi silhouette is a softer version, which works particularly well when shooting through one of my maternity dresses to show off the bump while keeping a little more coverage. Both are worth doing if you have the time in your session.
For silhouette shots, fitted clothing works well, as does going partially without if you’re comfortable with that. The focus is entirely on shape, so whatever helps you feel at ease is the right choice.
Silhouette images pair really well alongside lighter, softer portraits to give you a more varied gallery. If you’d like to include them in your session, just mention it when we talk things through beforehand.
