Got a cake smash booked but no time to make your own cake? You’ve got a one-year-old, so that’s hardly surprising. And if a professionally made cake isn’t in the budget right now, that’s completely fine too.

There are some great options in the supermarkets that work really well for a smash. I’ve hand-picked the ones below because they’re gender neutral, I’ve had them all in the studio, and I know from experience that they smash brilliantly. There are plenty of other options in store too, so feel free to go off-list if something catches your eye.

A few things to bear in mind when you’re choosing:

You don’t need a big cake, so don’t worry about getting the largest one on the shelf. Don’t choose chocolate cake. I know it sounds fun, but trust me, it looks like something it really shouldn’t on camera. Go for buttercream icing rather than solid fondant, it’s much easier for little hands to get into. Don’t keep the cake in the fridge before you come. It needs to be at room temperature so it’s soft enough to actually smash.
