Silhouette family portraits are something I genuinely enjoy doing, and this image is a good example of why.
This one came out of a Baby Photography Club session this year. We’d done the standard portraits on one side of the studio and then moved over to try a semi-silhouette, and it was the silhouette that everyone loved most. That’s often how it goes.
The slightly tricky part of silhouette work with babies and toddlers is that they have their own opinions about which direction to look, and those opinions don’t always align with yours. What works is patience, soft background lighting, gentle posing, and being ready to catch the moment when everything naturally settles. You can’t force a silhouette, you just have to be ready for it.
If you’d like to include silhouette portraits as part of your family session, just mention it when we’re planning things and we’ll make time for it on the day.
