When a family came to their newborn session with the idea of creating some Viking themed pictures, I will freely admit to not immediately knowing where to start.

Some themes I am quite used to getting asked for, so I already know what to do when they are requested but this was a new one. I decided dark colours and lots of textures would be the way to go and the family in question brought along the crocheted Viking helmet.  Luckily it was big enough for us to continue creating our series of images as they visiting over the course of this young warrior’s first year.

Of course, the theme kind of took on a life of it’s own over that time with the dad getting an axe to include (we were careful!) and building a wooden throne and then I got in on the act with some personalised runic bunting and a cape, with his clever aunt creating the runic themed smash cake.  It really was a team effort and I’d never have guessed at the beginning of the year how much I would love the finished series.

It’s fun to work along a theme throughout the course of your newborn and three baby photography club studio visits. Of course, it’s not all we do at a session – the family in question have plenty of non-Viking themed images as well.  If there’s something that you love that you’d like to reflect in your pictures, just let me know!
