When you’ve been a newborn photographer for a while, you build up an arsenal of techniques to soothe an unsettled baby. It’s not to say that they work every time but you have a lot of things you can try to get them off to a deep and dreamy sleepy. However, the secret weapon more often than not is swaddling!
When you think about it, it does make sense that they would find comfort in being tightly wrapped as that is what they were used to in the womb. This is Roman and it settled him down a treat when he came in to the studio for his photos. I have a range of swaddles in different styles and colours (and actually just ordered a load more – ooops!) and so we can wrap them up like a burrito in almost any style. Usually I find that you can gently start to unwrap them once they have drifted off but swaddling is a great way to get us to that point faster.
Newborn Photography
A newborn photo shoot is best when your baby is between 5 and 10 days old as this is when they are at their maximum sleepiness and poseability to capture those dreamy shots. For this reason, I definitely recommend that you book when you are pregnant as this is one less thing to worry about scheduling when you’ve just got home from the hospital. We make an appointment for your due date plus 7 days and then adjust it as needed.
My newborn shoots include your three favourite digital images which you select from your online gallery a few weeks after your photo shoot – I don’t make you attend a sales or viewing session. Sessions take place in my warm and cosy studio in Crawley Down and cost £95.
